From ‘Black Widow’ to ‘F9’: A List of Movies Delayed in 2020

The current coronavirus pandemic is affecting the daily lives of people all over the world. It’s also impacting the film industry and postponing a number of highly anticipated theatrical releases. From Marvel’s Black Widow to Disney’s Mulan, here’s a breakdown of all the major movies getting delayed due to emerging safety measures.

MCU’s ‘Black Widow’

Black Widow is one of the most anticipated films of 2020, and it was scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 1. However, due to current safety measures and theater closures, Disney is postponing the release to an unspecified date.

The film follows Marvel superhero, Natasha Romanova (Scarlett Johansson) in her life before joining the Avengers. Some fans are hoping Black Widow avoids the delay and comes straight to Disney+. However, the studio has yet to confirm any details on when or how they’ll release it. 

Disney’s new live-action movie, ‘Mulan’

The live-action Disney movie, Mulan, was set to release on March 27. But the studio has delayed its release to an unknown date. Starring Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, and Jason Scott Lee, and based on the 1998 animated Disney film, Mulan tells the story of a girl who steps in to take her father’s place as a warrior in the Imperial Chinese Army. 

The new James Bond movie, ‘No Time to Die’

The next installment in the James Bond movie franchise, No Time to Die was scheduled to premiere in theaters on April 10. Starring Daniel Craig and Rami Malek, and written by Fleabag’s Pheobe Waller-Bridge, the movie pulls Bond out of retirement and sends him on a dangerous new mission.

As of now, the new release date for No Time to Die is November 25. 

‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’

The Personal History of David Copperfield is based on a Charles Dickens classic and stars Dev Patel in the titular role. The movie was set to release in American theaters on May 8 but has been delayed to an unspecified future date. 

John Krasinki’s ‘A Quiet Place Part II’

A sequel to John Krasinksi and Emily Blunt’s 2018 horror movie, A Quiet Place Part II was set to premiere in theaters in March. But in a tweet, director and co-writer Krasinksi revealed the film would be delayed to a date sometime in the future. 

“To all our A Quiet Place fans,” he wrote in the tweet, “One of the things I’m most proud of is that people have said our movie is one you have to see all together. Well due to ever-changing circumstances of what’s going on in the world around us, now is clearly not the right time to do that. As insanely excited as we are for all of you to see this movie … I’m gonna wait to release the film til we CAN all see it together!”

The new X-Men movie,’The New Mutants’

Fans have been waiting to see the next film in the X-Men universe, The New Mutants. However, due to the effects of the coronavirus, the Marvel movie’s scheduled release date of April 8 has been moved to an unspecified future date.

‘Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway’

Starring James Corden and Rose Byrne, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway would have premiered just in time for Easter on April 3. But due to the current situation, Sony changed the movie’s release date to Aug. 7. 

‘Spiral’ – the next film in the ‘Saw’ franchise

Chris Rock’s new horror movie, Spiral, will take viewers back into the Saw universe. However, fans who were expecting to see the movie on its original May 15 release date, will have to wait until sometime later this year. 

‘The Woman in the Window’

Starring Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, and Anthony Mackie, The Woman in the Window tells the story of a woman whose life is turned upside down when she befriends a neighbor from her window. The thriller was expected to premiere on May 15, but Disney is pushing its release to an unknown future date. 

‘F9’: The ninth movie in the ‘Fast and Furious’ saga

F9 is the action-packed ninth installment of The Fast and the Furious movie franchise. The film stars franchise regulars Vin Diesel, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Michelle Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson. Originally, F9 was set to release May 22, but Universal is pushing the date to April 2021.

Other films delayed due to the current pandemic

A few other notable films seeing delays due to coronavirus precautions are Run, Antlers, Antebellum,  and The Lovebirds
