Fans of The Lord of the Rings rejoice: a new game is on the way. German game developer Daedalic has taken on the daunting task of creating a new Lord of the Rings title without using any imagery from the Peter Jackson movies. Why would the company do this, you may ask? Because rights are a funny thing.
Here’s the gist: WB owns the rights to the The Lord of the Rings movies, but Daedalic secured the book rights through owner Middle-earth Enterprises. As a result, Daedalic will deliver a game with entirely new content out of both necessity and to make its own mark on the franchise.
While the game won’t release anytime soon, the few details available have already set high hopes for the Gollum-centered project. The game takes place before Gollum appears in the books and his split personalities will play a large role in the gameplay. Here’s everything you need to know about The Lord of the Rings: Gollum release date, trailer, platforms, and characters.
What is the release date for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum?
At the moment, Daedalic has only given fans a general release window for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. The game will come out sometime in 2021; however, the developer has not named a specific season yet.
Is there a trailer for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum?
No trailers, screenshots or concept art have released for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. At the moment, you’ll have to content yourself with the logo for the game, which features a silhouette of the titular character hiding in the text. With the release date at least two years away, the lack of content is hardly surprising. Hopefully, Daedalic will reveal more about the title during E3 2020 or one of the other major conventions.
What platforms will The Lord of the Rings: Gollum be on?
According to Daedalic, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be available on “PC and all relevant platforms at [the time of launch].” While incredibly vague, the statement seems to suggest the developer is holding off on officially announcing the game for Xbox and PlayStation until the next-gen versions of these consoles release. Google Stadia and the Nintendo Switch might also be possibilities.
What characters will be in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum?
Beyond its lead, Daedalic hasn’t given out much information about which characters you can expect in the new title. Because the game is set before Gollum appears in the books, you’ll probably interact with mostly new and unknown personas. With Daedalic so intent on leaving their own mark on the franchise, the opportunity to introduce a slew of new characters is an exciting one. Of course, with the long lifespans of many of the races of Middle Earth, you might have a cameo or two of some of your favorite characters to look forward to. Only time will tell.
