Disney’s live-action ‘Mulan’ premieres during March 2020

She’ll bring honor to us all — again. One of the newest movies joining Disney’s library is a live-action adaptation of their 1998 film, Mulan. Actress Liu Yifei portrays the title character in this live-action version. Directed by Niki Caro, this movie helps tell the story of one young woman who disguises herself as a man to save her father and bring honor to her family.

“We were looking for a story that did a few things. We wanted to tell a story that we don’t see enough of,” the writers of Mulan, Elizabeth Martin, and Lauren Hynek, said during an interview with Film Inquiry.

“A story about a strong woman of color who gets to be the hero,” they continued. “We were also looking for something we thought it was possible to sell since we wrote the script on spec and were hoping to get paid for that work. And, of course, we wanted a story that got us excited to write and to see on the big screen one day.  After a lot of brainstorming and research and advice from smart people, Mulan became the obvious choice.

The trailer for Disney’s ‘Mulan’ teases music from the original animated film

As an adaptation of the original animated film, Disney’s latest movie leans closely on Chinese culture and folklore. As a result, Mulan reportedly features a few new characters. That includes the title character’s love interest, Chen Honghui, played by Yoson An. The villain of this film fights alongside a witch, who can reportedly shapeshift in this adaptation of Mulan.

A source close to the DisInsider reports, “a phoenix replaced Mulan’s beloved sidekick Mushu, and that while music from the animated film will be included in the remake, the songs will not be sung by the cast as the music is just instrumentals.”

Will Disney’s live-action Mulan be on Disney+?

Unlike live-action films like Lady and the Tramp, Disney’s remake of Mulan is headed straight to theaters. Presumably, it will eventually be available on the company’s streaming platform. However, recently released films, like Toy Story 4 and The Lion King have yet to release on this subscription service.

If the 2020 version of Mulan were to be on Disney+ it wouldn’t be for at least a few months after its cinematic run. Fortunately, though, Disney+ houses animated films that inspired a slew of live-action remakes.

That includes the original Mulan, which premiered in 1998. Live-action adaptations that are already on this streaming platform include Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Lady and the Tramp, Dumbo. Most recently the company added their 2019 reboot of Aladdin. Disney’s 2019 blockbuster, The Lion King, joins the service’s library on Jan. 28, 2020.

Disney’s live-action remake, entitled Mulan, premieres in theaters on March 27, 2020.
