This year, 2020, is the first one in a while in which we won’t see Chris Evans portray Steve Rogers/Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But some fans are plotting new ways in which he could return to Marvel. Here’s one possible way they could things.
Chris Evans starred as Captain America in the MCU

Evans has been a part of the MCU since 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. The film took audiences back in time to see how the original supersoldier obtained his abilities and ended with him waking up in the 21st century. From there, his story really began.
The actor reprised the role in The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Steve Rogers quickly became one of two defacto leaders of the Avengers and helped to establish the legacy of the MCU.
His final film was ‘Avengers: Endgame’
The actor closed out his time in the MCU (at least, as far as we’re aware at this point) with Endgame. The film saw him help the Avengers kill Thanos, seemingly come to terms with the Decimation, and then work to reverse its effects via time travel after Scott Lang (Ant-Man) revealed the practicalities of the Quantum Realm.
In the final act of Endgame, Cap utilizes Thor’s hammer, says the iconic line “Avengers assemble,” and sees his friend Tony pass away after defeating Thanos. It’s a lot for any character, especially one that’s seen as much as he has. Finally, he returns all of the Infinity Stones and lives out his life with Peggy Carter before turning over his shield to Falcon.
Evans could return as this version of the comic book character
While fans were happy that Cap didn’t die the way Iron Man did, it’s still very sad to see him exit the MCU. Many are still looking for ways in which he could return. And one possible option comes from both Evans’ recent role in Knives Out and a comment he made in Endgame.
Evans took on the jerky grandson of a murdered mystery writer in Rian Johnson’s latest film. Additionally, Endgame gave a nod to the comics when 2023 Cap says, “Hail Hydra” in the elevator scene. So MCU Cosmic founder Jeremy Conrad says that the introduction of a multiverse would be the perfect way to bring Evans back to the MCU without erasing his former role.
What has he said about reprising his role?
Now that the idea is out there, the question becomes: Would Evans actually want to return to the MCU? He’s certainly said his goodbyes already, as seen in the above Twitter post after wrapping Endgame.
When asked about the possibility of a film or TV series that would show what happened when he returned the Stones, Evans said, “You know, I’m not sure I can give you those answers. That’s weak as s***, but ask the writers.” Speaking of them, Endgame and Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely aren’t keen to bring him back.
“I love writing for Cap, I love Evans. But I really feel, much like [with] Tony [Stark], we got them to a place where they don’t need to do it anymore,” said Markus. McFeely added, “I do worry that if they do stuff like that, it’ll ding Endgame in the rearview mirror.” So don’t hold your breath for another Cap in the future.
