The previous Star Wars film, The Last Jedi, has been on the minds of millions of movie fans for the past several months. You’d think members of the film’s cast would be able to remember the name of the movie. Yet, one prominent member of The Last Jedi‘s cast forgot its name.
Adam Driver makes a major fumble
Comicbook.com reports when Adam Driver was asked about the film, he seemed to forget its name, referring to it as “umm…uh…the second one.” He was, however, able to remember the title of The Force Awakens.
Some fans feel Driver’s remark is simple forgetfulness. Others feel it may reveal Driver doesn’t care much about The Last Jedi. He would not be the first member of the Star Wars cast to have some misgivings about the film. Mark Hamill and Daisy Ridley have both been open about their issues with The Last Jedi.
Does Adam Driver like ‘Star Wars’?
Previously, Driver had positive things to say about the making of The Last Jedi. Comparing the making of The Force Awakens to the making of The Last Jedi, he told GQ “The first one was all ‘You can’t f*ck it up,’ you know? There was a lot more hanging out this time. Then there are just practical things, like I have a lightsaber. That’s fun.”
At the very least Driver is a fan of the earlier films. He told Rolling Stone he was initially reluctant to become part of Star Wars. He explained “Just because people can remake something, or revisit a world, doesn’t necessarily mean they should. I’ve seen a lot of bigger-budget movies that sacrifice character and stories for spectacle, and I had no idea what it was going to look like or what the script was.”
He continued “But the first words out of J.J.’s mouth were about character and story. It was all really cool. And even then, you have doubts. Can I live up to that? I’m a fan of the movies. You don’t want to f*ck it up, by any means. It seemed that because I was scared of it, maybe it was a good reason to do it.”
George Lucas has been in a similar situation
Driver certainly isn’t the first member of the Star Wars to get in a situation like that. George Lucas has been in the same boat. In the original Star Wars film – which Lucas wrote and directed – Obi-Wan Kenobi tells Luke Skywalker that the Old Republic stood for a thousand generations.
One of the prequel films tells a different story. In Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones – which was also written and directed by Lucas – Chancellor Palpatine says the Old Republic has stood for a thousand years.
This is a huge error. To the average viewer, it might not matter. However, some Star Wars fans are very invested in the chronology of a galaxy far, far, away. Fans who are obsessed with keeping the film’s universe internally consistent have thought of numerous explanations to try to explain this discrepancy.
Driver and Lucas have both had their slip ups. We all make them. It doesn’t mean they don’t love Star Wars.
