Though we’ve barely forgiven Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for the disaster that was Season 8 of GoT — the duo have already forged ahead with preparing their newest project. Though Star Wars fans were delighted when the GoT creators decided not to move ahead with their plans for the franchise, fans of fiction and horror writer H. P. Lovecraft might not be so pleased about this recent news.
In addition to their move away from massive Star Wars deal which was supposed to usher in a new trilogy beginning in 2022 — the pair have seemingly walked away from their controversial show Confederate which was supposed to be set at HBO. The series was set to be a slavery drama in an alternate timeline, where slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution.
Thankfully, Weiss and Benioff are sticking to fiction.
Inside David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ monster-themed movie
Like the did with George R.R. Martin for Game of Thrones — Benioff and Weiss are turning to a prolific author for their next work. Their latest project will focus on the writings of New England based fiction writer, H.P. Lovecraft. Set in the 1920’s the movie will be based on Lovecraft’s writings. It will unpack what would happen if all of the horrific creatures he wrote about weren’t simply figments of his imagination.
The film is also set to focus on Lovecraft’s most famous beastie, Cthulhu. Deadline is reporting that the movie will be written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, the scribes behind Aeon Flux, RIPD and the Clash of the Titans remake. Lovecraft will be executive produced by Destroyer and Jennifer’s Body director Karyn Kusama.
‘Lovecraft’ will not be apart of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ Netflix deal
In August 2019 it was reported that Benioff and Weiss signed a stunning $200 million deal with Netflix to make exclusive shows and TV series for the platform. We have no clue what these shows and movies will look like, but just hope that they’re good and that Benioff and Weiss take their time with them.
“We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix. They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members,” Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, told The Hollywood Reporter.
However, Lovecraft will not be a part of Netflix. The film has been set a Warner Bros. for years — well before the Netflix agreement was reached.
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are not involved in HBO’s upcoming ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel
Since they will be busy with Lovecraft and their forthcoming projects at Netflix — fans of #demThrones will be delighted to know that Benioff and Weiss have no connection to HBO’s forthcoming GoT prequel.
The new series — which has been tentatively called House of Dragons has been given a 10-episode Season 1 order from HBO. The series has GRRM’s involvement and is set to follow Aegon I Targaryen and his sisters/wives Visenya and Rhaenys who conquered most of Westeros with their dragons.
Martin and writer Ryan Condal create the series which is set 300 years before Ned Stark becomes Robert Baratheon’s hand.
