Will Marvel’s Ant-Man Ever Go to Space in the MCU?

Call it a continuity error or just plain unfair treatment, but it looks like Ant-Man is the only member of the Avengers: Endgame team who hasn’t yet made it into space in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With so many films and shows overlapping to provide these characters with the chance to soar between worlds, it seems like an oversight that Ant-Man hasn’t gotten to take advantage of these travels, too.

Will Ant-Man get a chance to soar intergalactically, or is he doomed to a life much less adventurous than his other super-powered peers? This is a question that fans of the MCU have taken to debating, and it leads to more questions about the future of Ant-Man in the MCU.

Ant-Man is a fan favorite

If Ant-Man hasn’t gotten the full range of opportunities as other members of the Endgame team, it’s not because he lacks the popularity. In fact, Ant-Man is a fan favorite.

Of course, Paul Rudd’s ability to deliver delicious deadpan humor is part of the draw, but it’s not all of it. Another reason fans are taken by the story is that the first Ant-Man movie wasn’t as high-stakes as many other films in the MCU.

Ant-Man is portrayed as a down-to-earth character, and his quest to earn the love of his daughter is relatable and heartfelt in a way that many of the otherworldly plots within the MCU can’t quite be. Combining this feel-good storyline with Rudd’s natural charm and boyish good looks is a surefire recipe for enjoyment.

‘Ant-Man 3’ is on the way

We can’t know for sure when it will arrive — and the filming schedule for Phase 4 MCU projects has been pushed back by the pandemic, so it has likely been delayed — but Ant-Man 3 is on its way. In the meantime, fans have kept themselves occupied with wide speculation about just what the film could bring.

One theory suggests that the Fantastic Four will make an appearance. Perhaps they’ll be stuck in the quantum realm, and it will be up to Scott Lang (AKA Ant-Man) to rescue them.

Another possible tie-in to other films within the franchise and future projects for the MCU is through the Young Avengers. Consistent with the comics, Scott could try to push his daughter Cassie out of the life of a superhero only to see her reject that advice and eventually become Stature.

Will Ant-Man ever go to space?

No matter what Ant-Man 3 has in store for the character, we’ll have to wait to find out if the plot will finally give Ant-Man the chance to go into space. Fans on Reddit pointed out that Rocky promised Ant-Man he would take him into outer space. Certainly, interplanetary travel has featured in the plots of other members of the Endgame team. When will Ant-Man finally get his chance?

Some fans connected this missed experience to a larger theme of slighting Scott: “It always made me a little sad how Scott gets s**t on by basically every one during Endgame. I think the worst thing he really did was be naive, hell he’s half the reason they’re even able to pull off the events of Endgame in the first place!”

Others pointed out that this mistreatment is wholly part of the role that Scott plays within the entire hierarchy of the characters. “You’re supposed to feel bad! Scott’s the scrappy underdog: consistently underestimated, then critical for success,” one fan explained.

Of course, if it’s true that Scott is the scrappy underdog who is always underestimated, it only makes sense that he will eventually get to demonstrate the full range of his talents and abilities. Surely that will earn him a little flight into outer space?
