Actors Who Came Out After Portraying an LGBTQ+ Character

Demi Lovato was cast as Dani, the girlfriend of Naya Rivera’s character, Santana Lopez, in the fifth season of “Glee”. Following Rivera’s tragic death, Lovato participated in a cast tribute to her. In a video for the 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards, Lovato said that playing Naya’s girlfriend was an honour and that the character Santana Lopez was groundbreaking for closeted queer girls.

Lovato has been open about their sexuality and identity since their time on “Glee”. In 2021, they revealed that they are pansexual and later came out as non-binary, changing their pronouns to they/them. However, in 2022, Lovato started using “she/her” pronouns again, explaining that they had been feeling more feminine. As of this writing, Lovato is dating musician Jordan Lutes.
