2023 Oscars: A Look at the Notable Snubs, from Angela Bassett to Elvis

2023 Oscars: A Look at the Notable Snubs, from Angela Bassett to Elvis

The 95th Academy Awards saw “Everything Everywhere All at Once” take home many of the night’s most prestigious awards, from Best Picture to Best Actress. This remarkable success meant that other films, such as “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Tár,” were shut out entirely. The track “Naatu Naatu” from “RRR” won Best Original Song, much to the delight of Lady Gaga and Rihanna, who had both performed during the show. Paul Mescal was thrilled to be nominated for the first time, while Hugh Grant appeared less than pleased for reasons unknown.

Angela Bassett was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” making her the first actor in a Marvel movie to be up for an Oscar. Despite her powerful performance as Queen Ramonda, Jamie Lee Curtis won for her role in “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” Bassett reflected on her character in a statement to POPSUGAR, saying, “‘Wakanda Forever”s Queen Ramonda is a character that touched my spirit because she is a mother and a leader who must care for her grieving nation as much as she cares for her family in mourning.”

“The Banshees of Inisherin” was nominated for nine Oscars but left with none, despite Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, Brendan Gleeson, Hong Chau, and Kerry Condon all being up for awards. Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” was also nominated for eight awards but failed to win any, despite Austin Butler’s impressive performance as the titular superstar.

Ultimately, while some snubs hurt, it’s difficult to be anything but proud of the “Everything Everywhere All At Once” team — especially after Quan’s tearful speech and Yeoh’s mom’s adorable reaction to her daughter’s win.
