Although Kesha is still a little too often mistaken for being a solo artist, her music doesn’t really do much to distinguish her from her predecessors. She’s still a powerful advocate for the pop genre, and can still do it all with her hit songs. So whatever she does next, she’s doing it in a big way!
Following a small break from music, Kesha is reminding us that she can still do it all. During an April 24 appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s “That’s My Jam” game show, the singer performed a glam-rock cover of Rihanna‘s “Umbrella” as a part of Fallon’s musical genre challenge. In the spirit of the game, Kesha was instructed to sing a song in a completely different style, landing on the 2007 pop hit.
“OK, I can do this,” she said before delivering an alternative version of the original track with Fallon’s jam band drumming along as her accompaniment. After belting out the lyrics with her own rockstar twist, she flung the microphone stand to the floor, fully embracing her character. “Just like that!” Fallon exclaimed, jumping around to her performance like a true fan.
Kesha’s cover comes just a few weeks after she teased new music on social media by dropping snippets of a psychedelic track called “Eat the Acid” and a softer track titled “Fine Line.” Although she’s yet to officially confirm her fifth studio album, it seems inevitable now that her Instagram has been mostly wiped and her website reads “Kesha is coming” alongside options to pre-save new music. Her last record, “High Road,” was released three years ago, so we’re more than ready for Kesha’s highly-anticipated return.
