The decision made by Shiloh Pitt-Jolie, the daughter of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, to legally drop her father’s last name and become Shiloh Jolie has sparked public interest. This move, which she initiated upon turning 18 this May, involved filing a petition to formally change her name.
Shiloh was born on May 27, 2006, in Swakopmund, Namibia, as the first biological child of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. To push forward with altering her legal name, she placed an ad in the Los Angeles Times and engaged a lawyer to handle the paperwork discreetly, excluding Angelina Jolie from the process.
Requirements dictated that Shiloh formally announce her intentions in the public domain before the court could proceed with approving her name change petition.
Challenges for the Family
Following the divorce of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, familial complexities emerged, leading to decisions about the children’s surnames. In a bid similar to Shiloh’s, Vivienne and Zahara, her siblings, opted to remove Pitt from their names, albeit informally.
Zahara, at 19 years old, explicitly chose to forego her father’s last name. Notably, Shiloh, amidst the siblings, undertook the name change through a legal process, distinguishing herself from her sisters.
Prior to Shiloh’s birth, the couple had Maddox, now 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, and the twins, Vivienne and Knox, 15. The evolving dynamics within the family hint at the possibility of further name changes among the siblings.
