Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, highlighted the weaknesses in the country’s democratic institutions. He emphasized the urgent need for reforms in the judiciary, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the executive branch.
Ganduje spoke about the vital role of the judiciary in Nigeria’s democracy and identified financial dependence and political interference as major obstacles that need to be addressed.
Addressing the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) Roundtable in Abuja, Ganduje called for unity among political party leaders to support and strengthen the judiciary. He stressed the importance of transparency, accountability, and integrity in sustaining democracy.
Emphasizing the significance of institutional reform, Ganduje discussed the necessity for institutions to rely on their rules and regulations rather than individual leaders. He urged a collaborative effort to bolster the judiciary, uphold the rule of law, and promote democratic principles.
Ganduje warned against a continuous cycle of blame within the system and advocated for comprehensive institutional reforms. He emphasized that for democracy to thrive, all institutions involved must be robust and not dependent on specific leaders.
Highlighting the overarching weakness of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, Ganduje underscored the critical need for reform in the judiciary, INEC, security agencies, and the executive branch to effectively address existing challenges and ensure the sustainability of democracy.
