David and Victoria Beckham have been a prominent couple for 25 years, but perceptions of them shifted with the release of the “Beckham” docuseries on Netflix. The series quickly garnered 30 million views and 145 million hours of viewing, becoming Netflix’s most-watched original docuseries since “Harry & Meghan” in 2022.
The scene that caught viewers’ attention and circulated on social media was when David intervened during Victoria’s conversation with director Fisher Stevens, unexpectedly revealing a candid moment. Victoria, the fashion icon and former Spice Girl, had hoped for a different scene to gain attention.
Was David Behind Victoria’s “Embarrassment”?
In a recent interview with Variety, Stevens discussed filming “Beckham,” which provided insights into the Spice Girls’ world tour and David’s soccer days at Manchester United around the time of their 1999 marriage.
Stevens shared his surprise at David’s interruption of Victoria’s interview, stating, “Be honest,” which was unscripted and left many feeling uneasy.
“(Victoria) felt embarrassed and nervous because (David) had been monitoring the interview, and I was also taken aback,” Stevens expressed about the incident.
Stevens believed that David’s intent was not to embarrass Victoria but to adhere to the documentary’s objective of authenticity rather than a superficial portrayal of the Beckhams.
“(David) realized this couldn’t be a superficial piece,” Stevens explained. “It couldn’t be the typical brand Beckham image, and that was my approach.”
Ultimately, Stevens believed that David’s unexpected involvement added depth and sincerity to the docuseries, resonating with viewers seeking a genuine portrayal of the Beckhams’ lives.
“His presence turned out to be beneficial in a way, creating a memorable moment for the film, although it frustrated me,” Stevens concluded.
