The mishap had severe repercussions on the victim, impacting her academic performance, instilling a fear of being alone, and leading to a previous su!cide attempt.

A 42-year-old pastor, Dumisani Khumalo, has been handed a life sentence by the Nelspruit Sexual Offences Court in South Africa for assaulting a 14-year-old girl in 2020.

The NPA DPP Mpumalanga Regional spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, stated that the assault had grave effects on the victim, impacting her academic performance, instilling a fear of being alone, and leading to a previous su!cide attempt.

“The court’s decision today underscores the gravity of s3xual offences against children and the dedication to ensuring justice for victims,”
the statement noted.

“The incident took place on July 25, 2020, as the victim and a friend were heading to a shop in Sifunindlela, KaBokweni district.

“Khumalo offered them a ride in his car. After dropping the friend off at the shop, Khumalo manipulated the situation, drove past the store, made a U-turn, and parked at a playground, where he proceeded to assault the victim.

Subsequent to the assault, the victim managed to escape and seek help from a neighbor, leading to the arrest of the accused.

“During the trial, Khumalo pleaded not guilty and tried to discredit the victim, painting her as someone out to ruin his reputation.

“However, State Prosecutor John Mahlwele presented compelling evidence, including testimonies from the victim, a witness, and medical reports, which the court deemed credible.

“Moreover, a victim impact statement outlined the significant effects of the assault on the victim, including academic decline, fear of being alone, and a prior su!cide attempt.

“Prior to sentencing, Magistrate Recardo Cloete highlighted Khumalo’s lack of remorse during the trial, stating that there were no grounds to deviate from the mandatory life imprisonment for such a heinous crime.

“Khumalo was consequently sentenced to life imprisonment, with his name being added to the National Register of S3xual Offenders, disqualifying him from working with children.

“The NPA expressed satisfaction with the verdict, underscoring its unwavering commitment to prosecuting Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and femicide cases.

“This case is a stark reminder of the necessity to safeguard vulnerable individuals in society and hold wrongdoers accountable for their deeds.”
