The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held a private meeting on Monday regarding the detention of its President, Joe Ajaero.
Ajaero was taken into custody by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, as he was on his way to participate in the UK’s Trade Union Congress.
NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, issued a statement emphasizing: “The NLC remains steadfast in defending workers’ rights and will not be intimidated by the government’s oppressive actions.”
“We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Joe Ajaero and cessation of harassment against labor leaders and all Nigerians with differing views.
“We also call for the release of all individuals imprisoned for exercising their democratic rights during the #EndBadGovernance protests nationwide.
“The Congress’s bodies are currently meeting privately, and the results will be made public soon.”
