Governor Babagana Zulum

Babagana Zulum, the Governor of Borno State, has announced that the Federal Government has allocated N3 billion to assist with the aftermath of severe flooding in the region.

The disastrous floods in Maiduguri have resulted in over a million people being displaced.

During a visit to the Bakassi IDP camp near the Biu-Damboa road in Maiduguri, Governor Zulum provided an update on the floods and delivered financial aid to the displaced individuals.

He confirmed that food and vital supplies would be delivered, with local vendors engaged to provide meals for those sheltering in the camp.

To address health concerns, the governor stated that a committee would be formed to monitor disease outbreaks and provide necessary interventions.

Search and rescue efforts are already underway in affected areas to evaluate the damages, and data collection on those impacted will start without delay.

Zulum explained that this flooding was primarily caused by significant rainfall this year.

He also highlighted that urban development in Maiduguri has obstructed natural waterways, worsening the flooding situation.

Moreover, he mentioned that the overflow from the Alo Dam was intensified by releases from dams located in Cameroon.

To prevent future flooding, the governor outlined plans to enhance the capacity of the Alo Dam and to remove constructions in areas prone to flooding.
