Cox reflects on Monica in today’s world

At the Rock4EB event held in Malibu, California, Cox opened up about the show that launched her and her fellow cast members to fame.

“It’s just incredible to think about how fast time flies,” shared Cox with PEOPLE, now 60 years old.

“In the past, I would say, ‘Oh, I can’t wait for this month’ or ‘It feels like an eternity.’ I never say that anymore.”

Since its launch on September 22, 1994, “Friends” has become a cultural landmark.

The series, which revolves around six friends experiencing life in New York City, garnered immense popularity, running for a decade until concluding in 2004.

Cox alongside Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and the late Matthew Perry, created one of television’s most unforgettable ensembles.

On her character’s continued relevance, Cox quipped, “Monica is very much alive. Are you kidding?”

Cox on the potential for a ‘Friends’ reboot

While she hasn’t kept up with recent episodes, Cox acknowledged that the show remains compelling whenever she stumbles upon it.

“It’s an incredible show. The humor still resonates, and the characters are exceptional, thanks to our talented writers,” she noted, feeling grateful for the show’s appeal to fans of varying ages.

However, regarding a potential reboot, Cox expressed reservations.

With show creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane considering reviving the series with a focus on the characters’ children, Cox is skeptical about replicating the original’s charm.

“It’s tough to recreate anything, especially with ‘re’ in front of it… This group is something truly special,” she shared.

This milestone not only celebrates the series but also comes in the wake of the death of Matthew Perry, known for his role as Chandler Bing.

Perry passed away in October 2023 at 53, battling addiction, and is fondly remembered by his fellow cast members and the show’s creators.

Cox and her “Friends” co-stars recently reunited to honor Perry’s memory, casting a bittersweet shadow over the 30th anniversary festivities.
