The Blade Reboot: A Rollercoaster Journey to the Big Screen
Marvel’s attempt to reboot Blade has faced numerous challenges. Starting with an exciting reveal at San Diego Comic-Con five years ago, the project has experienced countless delays, script changes, and shifts in leadership, leaving fans uncertain about its future. Nonetheless, recent news indicates that progress may finally be on the horizon.
Speculation is rife that Jeymes Samuel, known for directing The Harder They Fall and The Book of Clarence, could be stepping in to direct the film. Despite the setbacks, Marvel’s Kevin Feige has kept Blade as a key priority, and Samuel reportedly made a strong impression in discussions with Marvel executives.
In addition, there has been buzz surrounding Mahershala Ali, the actor cast as Blade, after he began following director Jordan Peele on Instagram. This led to speculation about Peele’s potential involvement as director. However, sources have confirmed that he was never in consideration for the position. Ali, while eager to portray the character, has expressed frustration over the numerous delays affecting the project.
The script for Blade has undergone several revisions. Eric Pearson, famed for his work on Black Widow, is the latest writer to take on the project, making him the sixth contributor after talents like Stacy Osei-Kuffour and Nic Pizzolatto. There is optimism that Pearson’s new draft might finally resolve ongoing issues for both Marvel and Ali, helping to move the project forward.
Initially, Blade was planned to be set in the 1920s, but the narrative will now take place in modern times, allowing for a contemporary interpretation of the half-vampire, half-human protagonist. Mia Goth is still attached to portray Lilith, a vampire seeking Blade’s daughter’s blood, though some co-stars, including Aaron Pierre and Delroy Lindo, have exited the film.
If everything goes according to plan, production for Blade is expected to kick off on November 1, 2024, with hopes for a theatrical release on November 7, 2025. After years of anticipation, fans could soon be treated to the Daywalker’s cinematic comeback.
With Samuel potentially at the helm, Blade may receive a fresh and dynamic vision, merging elements of action and horror with the distinct visual style Samuel demonstrated in The Harder They Fall. He might just be the perfect fit to bring this legendary vampire hunter to life.
