Drake Hogestyn, renowned for his nearly forty-year role on the beloved soap opera ‘Days of our Lives’, tragically passed away on Saturday, just a day shy of turning 71. Hogestyn, celebrated for his portrayal of John Black, reportedly “passed away peacefully” with family nearby, as confirmed by the show’s official Instagram account.
Originally from Fort Wayne, Indiana, Hogestyn’s life journey was diverse before he reached Hollywood. A gifted athlete, he played baseball at the University of South Florida, where he balanced his sports pursuits with a double major in microbiology and applied sciences. Initially, he aspired to become an oral surgeon.
However, his path shifted when professional baseball teams like the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees recognized his talent, leading to his selection in the 1976 MLB Draft. Unfortunately, an injury curtailed his minor league baseball career, steering him toward acting.
His transition to Hollywood was facilitated by a special acting training program from Columbia Pictures, which ultimately cast him as John Black—a complex role that evolved from a mysterious police officer to a secret agent in “Days of Our Lives.”
During his impressive 38-year tenure on the series, Hogestyn featured in over 4,200 episodes, solidifying his status as a beloved figure within the show’s community.

Drake Hogestyn succumbed to pancreatic cancer after demonstrating remarkable bravery in his battle. He is survived by his wife, Victoria Post, their four children—Whitney, Alexandra, Rachael, and Ben—and seven grandchildren, who will honor his memory and achievements.

“After a formidable fight, he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. He was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, and actor, who cherished performing for the Days audience and collaborating with an exceptional cast, crew, and production team. We will love and miss him dearly, every single day.”
