Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has been preoccupied with speculation surrounding his job security. Despite his efforts, he has struggled to establish a strong foundation at the club, often facing setbacks despite some advancements.

The previous season was tumultuous, but his triumph in securing the FA Cup provided him some leeway with the new owners, Ineos, who decided to maintain his position. However, this season has begun on a troubling note, with the team suffering three defeats in their first six league matches, rekindling fears of a disappointing campaign.

After a significant loss to Tottenham, where captain Bruno Fernandes was dismissed, talk of a managerial change has intensified.

Ten Hag has expressed that he isn’t anxious about his standing, stating post-match, “We have all chosen to stay united as a leadership and ownership… Our focus is on overcoming injuries and growing together. There’s no concern from my side.” However, the uncertainty surrounding his future continues to cause speculation among fans and the press.

Potential Replacements for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

Ruud van Nistelrooy

One of the leading contenders for Ten Hag’s role is Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former Manchester United player, who currently serves as an assistant coach. He joined the coaching staff in the summer after a stint managing PSV, where he claimed the KNVB-Bekker and Johan Cruyff Shield. After departing PSV due to inadequate support, he is now seen as a possible successor due to his familiarity with the club and previous managerial experience.

Having taken a year out of management, van Nistelrooy’s close ties to Manchester United may facilitate a smooth transition if he assumes the head coach position.

Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate, a contentious figure during his tenure with England, recently stepped down following a disappointing Euro 2024 final against Spain. This opens the door for a potential return to club management, making him an option for Manchester United should they decide to part ways with Ten Hag. Throughout his coaching career, Southgate has only led one club, Middlesbrough, from 2006 to 2009.

Thomas Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel, who recently left Bayern Munich, is also in the running. The German manager has substantial Premier League credentials, notably winning the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2021. His resume includes time with major clubs such as PSG and Borussia Dortmund, highlighting his capabilities as a top-tier manager. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether he would be interested in taking on this challenge at Manchester United.

Kieran McKenna

Kieran McKenna, the current Ipswich Town manager, is one of the rising stars in the Premier League. Formerly an assistant at Manchester United, he has led Ipswich to two consecutive promotions since taking charge in December 2021. Despite a challenging start in the Premier League, McKenna is dedicated to his role. However, appointing a relatively young and inexperienced manager poses significant risks.

Other Noteworthy Candidates

Thomas Frank — Frank was reportedly in discussions with the new ownership about the managerial position before they opted to retain Ten Hag. He has been a desired candidate but has faced challenges with Brentford this season.

Ruben Amorim — The youthful manager of Sporting Lisbon is often mentioned for high-profile Premier League roles. Amorim is likely to find a top job in the near future but may be an uncertain fit for Manchester United.

Michael Carrick — Carrick had a lengthy playing career at Manchester United before transitioning into coaching. He served as an interim manager and has been successful at Middlesbrough, known for a forward-thinking approach. Still, questions remain whether his experience is adequate for a leap to your esteemed position.
