Typhoon Krathon Update: Forecast and Effects
Typhoon Krathon is anticipated to shift into the northeastern maritime zone of the northern sea, aligning with a low-pressure trough. This situation is likely to result in thunderstorms and substantial waves particularly in the northern sea and the Gulf of Tonkin.
As reported by the National Hydrometeorological Forecasting Center, at 1 PM on September 30, Typhoon Krathon was positioned around 20.4 degrees North and 121.3 degrees East, to the north of Luzon Island in the Philippines.
The typhoon currently has winds reaching Category 15 levels (167-183 km/h), with gusts surpassing Category 17. Its movement is directed west-northwest at a speed of 10-15 km/h.
In the next 24 hours, Krathon is projected to enter the northeastern section of the northern sea. Forecasts suggest minimal impacts on Vietnam’s coastal and mainland regions.
From 72 to 120 hours later, the typhoon is expected to continue moving north-northeast at speeds of about 5-10 km/h while gradually weakening.
The northeastern maritime area (north of latitude 18.0N; east of longitude 116.5E) will experience strong winds between Category 6-7, escalating to Category 8-9 by early October 1. Wave heights will reach 2 to 4 meters initially, potentially increasing to 7 – 9 meters near the typhoon’s center, resulting in very rough sea conditions.
Notably, a low-pressure trough linking with Typhoon Krathon spans from 19 to 22 degrees North latitude. It is forecast that, during the night of October 1 and into October 2, the Gulf of Tonkin will experience northeast winds at Category 5, possibly reaching Category 6 or 7, creating rough seas with wave heights of 2 – 3 meters.
These hazardous conditions pose risks to vessels operating in affected regions, including storms, waterspouts, and high waves.
As Typhoon Krathon approaches Taiwan (China), the Taiwanese Meteorological Agency has issued warnings. Experts anticipate that the typhoon will strengthen, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to Taiwan from the morning of October 1 through October 3.
Additionally, the Korean Meteorological Administration warns that Typhoon Krathon may alter its course towards the waters south of Jeju Island. If it continues moving north, it could impact South Korea directly between October 1 and 3.
