Initially brushing off the fall, she even laughed about it. However, her ski instructor and resort staff felt it necessary to escort her back to the hotel for medical evaluation.
Dr. David J. Langer, a neurosurgeon, noted that many individuals with an epidural hematoma often believe they are fine—Richardson was no exception. After being examined, she insisted she felt okay and decided to leave the infirmary without seeing a physician, which proved to be a grave error. Neurologist Dr. Dexter Sun highlighted that an immediate scan post-fall is crucial for diagnosis. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated before any medical imaging could be performed, and despite paramedics responding swiftly, she was unable to be saved after being transported between three hospitals and subsequently passing away the next day.
Richardson’s Chances of Survival Were Hampered by Location
While treatment for epidural hematoma exists, it’s tragic that Natasha Richardson may not have been able to receive timely medical care even had she remained at the infirmary, which likely lacked the necessary facilities for such a serious condition.
Richardson’s decision to decline further medical attention at another facility can be attributed to the remoteness of Mont Tremblant. Trauma surgeon Dr. Tarek Razek pointed out that travelling to Montreal, which was over two hours away by car, would have been her best chance for survival—quite a risky situation when time was crucial. Additionally, airlifting options were not available in Quebec for such circumstances, highlighting systemic inadequacies compared to larger cities.
The unfortunate accident that led to Richardson’s death was devastating, and it’s clear that survival might not have been possible regardless of the medical attention she received. In the years following her passing, her son Micheál Richardson has shared insights about coping with his mother’s unexpected death when he was just 14. In an interview, he expressed the profound shock of losing her and the mental turmoil it caused. Even after more than ten years, thoughts remain with Natasha Richardson and her family.
