He reflected on the significant event that took place 70 years ago when Vietnamese forces seized the capital from French colonial rulers. This was a crucial time when Hanoi and its northern provinces contributed to constructing socialism and staunchly supported the southern Vietnamese struggle against American forces until the victory of April 30, 1975.
Following Vietnam’s unification, Hanoi, alongside the nation, embarked on a new revolutionary journey towards socialism. Under the direction of the Party, the Hanoi Party Committee, city officials, and its citizens have been tirelessly working to navigate challenges, embracing reform and international integration, culminating in remarkable achievements of historical importance.
Today, Hanoi stands as the country’s political and administrative hub, a key center for culture, science, education, and economics, ranking among the 17 largest cities globally. Its economy continues to grow, reaching around USD 54 billion in 2023, outpacing the national growth rate, and consistently surpassing budget revenue targets.
The General Secretary and President pointed out that Vietnam’s accomplishments over the past four decades of Doi Moi (Renovation) provide an opportunity to enter a new era, one marked by progress that demands enhanced efforts from both Hanoi and the nation to achieve developmental objectives.
He stressed that Hanoi must strive to embody the vision of a socialist capital as envisioned by President Ho Chi Minh and fulfill its role in the current developmental phase of the country.
To achieve this goal, the city’s leaders must tap into community resources, merging national strength with contemporary capabilities. The capital should strengthen partnerships with other countries’ capitals, showcase the rich heritage of Thang Long – Hanoi, and foster a positive image of its culture and citizens both nationally and internationally, while continuing to enhance the capital’s and the nation’s profile on the global stage.
The celebration was held at the National Convention Center, attended by current and former leaders from the Party and State, representatives from central organizations, local officials, as well as international guests and delegates from various provinces.
Participants included veteran revolutionaries, esteemed Vietnamese Mothers, Heroes of the People’s Armed Forces, Labor Champions, former soldiers, youth volunteers, artists, intellectuals, and individuals from all walks of life and armed forces in the capital.
The event featured a special artistic presentation that highlighted pivotal moments from the struggle against French rule, the courageous spirit during liberation, and the remarkable historical milestones of Hanoi over the past seven decades.
