On October 12, local authorities in Quang Binh took action to evacuate 157 households, which included around 750 individuals, from Phong Nha town in Bo Trach district. This was necessary for the safe demolition of a large boulder that had developed dangerous cracks and was precariously located on a mountainside.
This hefty boulder, weighing over 300 tons, suffered a significant fracture as a result of heavy rains, flooding, and temperature changes that started in late September 2024. The crack formed near the Xuan Tien neighborhood, raising severe concerns about potential landslides.
Since the boulder was precariously positioned on the mountain’s edge, it posed a grave risk to the safety and properties of the nearby residents.
The dangerous boulder was situated only 17 meters from a tax office, 50 meters above ground level, 30 meters away from the Phong Nha Tourism Center’s dormitory, and 50 meters from Provincial Road 562.
The crack measured approximately 50 centimeters in width and stretched for 100 meters. Had it collapsed, it could have endangered eight households and various local offices, disrupting traffic and tourism along Provincial Road 562.
Recognizing the landslide threat, the Quang Binh Provincial People’s Committee declared a state of emergency and directed local authorities along with military support to tackle the hazard for public safety.
After evaluating the terrain and geological conditions, the Quang Binh Provincial Military Command joined forces with Bo Trach district authorities to assess the situation and coordinate a controlled demolition of the cracked boulder, ensuring the safety of residents and local officials.
By 1 PM that day, the military engineering team successfully completed the demolition.
Post-explosion, the area was inspected by authorities. Personnel from the Quang Binh Provincial Military Command worked alongside Bo Trach district officials and local agencies to swiftly clear debris and resume regular activities for both residents and tourists.
