Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed his deep concern over the escalating insecurity in the country and has called for immediate action to tackle this pressing issue.
Obasanjo shared these insights on Sunday, October 20, during his visit to Bauchi State, where he inaugurated various road improvement projects initiated by Governor Bala Mohammed.
While addressing attendees at the Emir of Bauchi’s palace, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman-Adamu, he remarked that the current security crises in Nigeria are significantly more severe than those experienced during his presidency. He advocated for community policing as a fundamental strategy to combat the increasing crime rates.
“Community policing is the most effective security method because it fosters familiarity among residents. This connection makes it simpler to spot any wrongdoers,” Obasanjo stated, underscoring the importance of local awareness in identifying security issues.
The ex-president voiced his alarm regarding the pervasive insecurity impacting various regions and urged for prompt measures to deal with it.
“The current state of insecurity in Nigeria is alarming compared to when we were in office, as we prioritized the safety of lives and properties. We must take urgent action now,” he emphasized.
Additionally, Obasanjo urged traditional leaders to actively engage in fostering community policing initiatives within their communities to mitigate growing criminal activities. He highlighted the significance of collaboration, solidarity, and shared responsibility in addressing the country’s security dilemmas, reminiscing about his administration.
“During our tenure, we focused on collective decision-making to maintain a shared vision. My ally, Ahmed Adamu Mu’azu, is here, and he can confirm that our successes were achieved through unity,” he remarked.
He wrapped up his remarks by reiterating that Nigeria can restore its peace and security through collective unity. “To move forward, we need harmony, unity, and shared support. Our nation can surely prosper again if we unite and work together,” Obasanjo concluded.
