Nnamdi Kanu
The head of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, is set to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja following allegations of court contempt regarding the ongoing detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
A court order issued on October 24, 2024, instructs Ajayi to provide a reason for his failure to adhere to an earlier court directive.
The controversy stems from the DSS’s noncompliance with a ruling that permitted Kanu’s legal representatives to visit him for three days each week at their Abuja detention location.
This access is vital for Kanu’s defence preparation. However, legal documents reveal that Kanu’s lawyers, led by Aloy Ejimakor Esq., were barred from seeing him on October 22, allegedly under orders from Ajayi.
The court notice stated, “You are hereby required to attend the court on the first mentioned day to show cause why an order for your committal should not be made.”
This situation adds more tension to Kanu’s ongoing legal battles, as he is facing serious charges, including treasonable felony.
Earlier, on September 24, Kanu had requested that Justice Binta Nyako step down from his case, claiming bias, yet the case was reassigned to continue with the same judge.
Additionally, the summons has been issued to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), along with federal government prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).
