Ekiti Lawmakers Face Backlash Over ₦250 Million Canada Trip

The Ekiti State House of Assembly is under fire for planning a costly trip to Canada, estimated at over ₦250 million.

The Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU) has criticized the trip, labeling it inappropriate given the current challenges facing Nigeria.

During a press conference in Ado-Ekiti, FESSU President Benjamin Onileowo expressed his objections, noting that this travel initiative demonstrates a lack of sensitivity towards the pressing issues experienced by citizens.

Onileowo highlighted that the proposed seven-day trip would include 18 lawmakers, five spouses, and four aides, raising concerns about the extravagant spending.

He emphasized that the money earmarked for this trip could instead be directed towards educational support, offering ₦50,000 scholarships to over 5,000 students in Ekiti State.

He stated, “As Nigeria struggles with serious economic issues impacting all sectors, especially education, such a trip is unwarranted.”

He further elaborated, “The planned Canada trip for 27 individuals during a time when we need to focus on improving the lives of our citizens is misguided. The resources proposed for this journey could immensely benefit our students and educational institutions.”

Onileowo concluded by calling for a reassessment of the lawmakers’ intentions, asking decision-makers to prioritize the needs of the community over luxurious excursions abroad.
