EFCC Summons Guests Over Naira Misuse at Kano Wedding

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned a Nigerian man, Ibrahim Mohammad, alongside his relatives and guests, over allegations of naira misuse at his wedding to Amina Babagana Zannah in Kano.

This development comes after a video went viral, showing guests at the wedding throwing naira notes, prompting public outrage as part of the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat currency misuse.

Dele Oyewale, the Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, released a statement confirming the agency’s actions concerning the incident. It appears there was initial confusion as reports wrongly linked the naira-spraying event to the wedding of Senator Danjuma Goje’s daughter, causing widespread concern and coverage in a prominent national newspaper.

However, Oyewale clarified that the naira misuse took place during the wedding reception of Zannah, whose mother is Hajara Seidu Haruna, known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria.

In the statement, it was noted:

“The EFCC has noted a viral video showing naira being freely sprayed at a wedding ceremony in Kano on Friday, October 24, 2024.”

The EFCC responded to the public’s outcry, which initially blamed Fauziya Danjuma Goje’s wedding for the naira abuse, including references in a significant national newspaper editorial.

As part of its commitment to tackling corruption and preventing currency degradation, the EFCC investigated the video and confirmed that the naira abuse was not associated with Goje’s wedding but occurred at the wedding reception for Amina Babagana Zannah, held on the same day.

Zannah is the daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, the CEO of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise, with operations in Abuja, Kano, and Dubai.

Haruna confirmed the incident depicted in the viral video, explaining that the groom’s family from Niger sprayed both naira and dollar bills in celebration.

The Commission has summoned groom Ibrahim Mohammad to its national headquarters in Abuja, alongside any guests who participated in the naira-spraying at the wedding.

The EFCC emphasized its intent to foster awareness regarding naira misuse while also ensuring that no innocent individuals are targeted falsely. The agency remains resolute in addressing currency abuse without exception, regardless of anyone’s status.
