Fans of HGTV’s “My Lottery Dream Home” undoubtedly cherish host David Bromstad for his vibrant personality, which truly enhances the viewing experience. While seeing lottery winners purchase luxurious properties is enjoyable, it’s Bromstad’s joyful demeanor that keeps audiences returning. Acknowledging his impact, he once described himself to the Star Tribune in 2019, saying, “I am Disney. I am magic. That’s all my life is about.” Interestingly, his journey to hosting was somewhat unexpected.
Bromstad, who gained recognition after winning “Design Star” and contributing to other HGTV shows, recounted to Watermark Online that he got the opportunity to host the show during a rare down time in his schedule. “I actually got on the show because there was nothing else going on [laughs],” he shared in October 2024. Having been bound by his contract with HGTV, he recalled, “They asked me if I wanted to do a pilot for this show called ‘My Lottery Dream Home?’ I thought, ‘Sure, I have literally nothing else to do.’” The rest is history—or is it?
David Bromstad considered a different path
It’s hard to envision “My Lottery Dream Home” without David Bromstad, but his aspirations initially took a different direction. Describing himself as a passionate creator, Bromstad admitted, “Yeah, no, the show is amazing. And it took me a minute to really come out and fall in love with the show because I was like, ‘OK,’ now I’m hosting a real estate show. I’m an artist,” he expressed on the “HGTV Obsessed” podcast in June 2021. He recognized how different hosting a real estate program was from his artistic roots, especially given the changing landscape of HGTV’s content. “Design was dead on the network,” Bromstad reflected, indicating a shift away from straightforward design shows towards renovation real estate.
By the time “My Lottery Dream Home” premiered in 2015, Bromstad had embraced his role wholeheartedly. In a discussion with AOL, he praised Loren Ruch, the show’s creator, calling him a genius: “Loren Ruch, who’s one of the executives, came up with the concept. He’s like Jesus at HGTV. He’s smart and social.” Bromstad noted, “I don’t know if he’d say the same thing about me. [Laughs] He’s the mastermind behind a lot of the really fun, great shows.” It’s clear that Bromstad has earned a special place in the hearts of fans and the admiration of his peers!
