Universal Pictures Reveals Teaser for Live-Action “How To Train Your Dragon”
The cherished story of a young Viking and his dragon companion is set to receive a live-action adaptation. Universal Pictures has unveiled the first teaser trailer for “How To Train Your Dragon,” which will premiere in theaters on June 13, 2025.
This one-minute teaser features Mason Thames portraying Hiccup alongside a lifelike rendition of the beloved Night Fury, Toothless. Returning to the cast are Gerard Butler as Chief Stoick, with Nico Parker playing Astrid and Nick Frost reprising his role as Gobber.
The narrative stays true to the original: on the island of Berk, where Vikings and dragons are fierce adversaries, Hiccup breaks tradition by befriending Toothless, defying norms and unveiling the true nature of dragons. Director Dean DeBlois, who was behind the original animated trilogy, is back to direct this adaptation, ensuring it remains faithful to the franchise’s essence.
The trailer notably highlights the film’s cutting-edge visual effects, as Toothless retains his iconic appearance while incorporating more realistic details. It also showcases familiar landscapes and settings from the animated series, including the breathtaking environments of Berk, now depicted with remarkable live-action visuals.
DeBlois emphasizes the increased stakes in this version, stating to Empire, “It’s so dialed up in terms of stakes — having a fully credible, photo-real dragon stomping around trying to kill him.”
Production of the film is led by producers Marc Platt (Wicked) and Adam Siegel (Drive) alongside DeBlois. The original animated trilogy received significant acclaim, with each installment nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
The cast also includes Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur. Viewers can expect an immersive experience in IMAX as they embark on this fantastical adventure.
