In 2024, weddings that incorporate fruits and vegetables as decorations are gaining popularity for their visual appeal and environmental benefits. Guests not only enjoy delicious meals but also take home fresh produce for their families.
A notable example of this trend was the wedding between Hoang Minh Hoa from Phu Cat, Binh Dinh, and Vo Hong Nga from La Gi, Binh Thuan, celebrated on November 20.
At the pre-wedding ceremony held two weeks earlier, the bride, Hong Nga, made waves with her unique bouquet featuring broccoli, symbolizing innovation, thrift, and hopes for a prosperous marriage.
The décor at the groom’s residence embraced a rustic style. Minh Hoa’s family provided two 20-year-old coconut trees as pillars for the entrance, and bamboo from their property was used for the gate frame. To complement the rural vibe, two large straw heaps decorated the entrance.
Hong Nga said, “We aimed to create a cozy, distinctive, and budget-friendly wedding. We used everything from our family to minimize waste.”
The couple sourced nearly a ton of fruits and vegetables for the wedding décor. Most came from Da Lat, arriving right before the ceremony to maintain freshness.
“Despite our careful planning, we still needed more produce. My family had to rush to the market, and vendors joked that if the village ran low on vegetables that day, it was due to our wedding,” shared Nga with a laugh.
To further enhance the celebration, Minh Hoa’s family donated 1,000 coconuts for decorative needs and refreshments.
The total expense for the nearly one ton of produce amounted to about 10 million VND ($400), which the couple found very economical.
“After the festivities, my husband climbed up to gather the remaining fruits and vegetables to distribute to guests for dinner—nothing was wasted. We even prepared bags in advance for easy takeaway,” Nga explained.
The couple’s bridal flowers were also homegrown, including coconut flowers and male papaya flowers, perfectly aligning with their nature-themed wedding.
Unique traditions such as coconut chopping and drinking fresh coconut water replaced toasting with wine, and the couple even planted a young coconut tree during the celebration.
Minh Hoa and Hong Nga met through work and shared eight years together before their wedding day.
