Cold Weather Hits Northern Vietnam
Northern Vietnam is currently facing its initial cold spell of the 2024–2025 winter, with frost first recorded on Fansipan Mountain in Lao Cai on November 23, as temperatures fell to around 1–2°C.
From November 26 to November 28, many areas across the northern plains saw temperatures drop below 10°C.
Although there has been a slight rise in daytime temperatures and some sunny intervals lately, the nights and early mornings remain quite chilly, with Hanoi’s temperatures settling between 16–18°C.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting anticipates that a strong cold front will arrive in Northern Vietnam between December 5 and 6, leading to light rain and a significant drop in temperatures.
In Hanoi, light rain is predicted during this period, with daytime highs on December 5 decreasing by approximately 3°C to about 23°C and nighttime lows around 19°C.
From December 6 to 8, temperatures are expected to fall further, ranging from 17 to 20°C in the capital.
Mountainous areas such as Lai Chau and Son La could see lows of 9 to 10°C during this time. Daytime highs in Lai Chau from December 6 to 8 are projected to be considerably low as well.
Weather Forecast Before the Cold Front
From November 30 to December 4, Northern Vietnam can expect light rain, morning mist, and cold temperatures at night and in the early hours.
Forecast for Other Regions
In North and Central Central Vietnam, from December 2 to 6, scattered showers are predicted, with the possibility of heavier localized rain on December 6.
For the South Central region, Central Highlands, and Southern Vietnam, late afternoon and evening showers or thunderstorms are likely, with some areas facing heavy rainfall.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned residents about potential thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds during these storms, as well as the risk of flash floods and landslides in susceptible areas.
Residents in Northern regions are urged to prepare for the cold weather in the evenings and mornings. Fishermen should stay informed about the weather, especially with strong waves expected offshore around December 6.
