Cho Mo Market: A Culinary Hub in Hanoi
The Cho Mo food court, located in one of Hanoi’s historic markets, is a popular spot for lunchtime diners, offering an array of budget-friendly dishes including bun dau mam tom (tofu with fermented shrimp paste), dried beef salad, pho, and rice porridge.
This market can be found at the busy intersection of Bach Mai and Minh Khai streets in the Hai Ba Trung District. Originally an open-air market, it underwent modernization in 2014 and now operates from the basement of a commercial complex, affectionately called “Hanoi’s underground market.”
Much like other traditional markets, Cho Mo features a diverse assortment of goods ranging from dried foods to garments, each organized into specific sections. However, the food court near the entrance is especially popular during lunch hours.
Visitors can indulge in a variety of Hanoi’s traditional dishes, such as bun dau mam tom, bun rieu (crab noodle soup), and pho, all available at economical prices.
In the summer, the market attracts locals, students, and workers looking for refreshing snacks like sweet soups and mixed fruit. Meanwhile, during the chilly months, heartier options like banh duc nong (steamed rice cake), che troi tau (glutinous rice dumplings), shrimp cakes, and fried dumplings are in high demand.
Patrons appreciate the affordability and diversity of the meals, with prices from VND 10,000 to VND 40,000 per dish, making it accessible for everyone. Many consider it to be less expensive compared to other restaurants in the city.
For example, you can get a serving of bun dau mam tom for VND 35,000, a portion of dried beef salad for VND 25,000, two fresh spring rolls for VND 15,000, and a cup of tao pho for just VND 10,000.
