Nikki Glaser has sparked a discussion about gender pay inequality during the Golden Globe awards. The 40-year-old comedian disclosed that her hosting fee was lower than that of previous male hosts when she led the ceremony on January 5.
Making her hosting debut, she presented Adrian Brody and Zoe Saldana with awards for Best Actor and Actress, respectively, and awarded The Brutalist as the Best Drama Motion Picture.
This revelation about her pay disparity has ignited conversations about sexism in the industry. Nonetheless, Glaser remains optimistic and expressed her determination to earn a higher salary in the future. She commented, “I was compensated fairly. I’m okay with it, but it’s true that a former host mentioned his pay, and mine was less.”
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, she remarked, “Next year, I plan to get a better rate. The first year is mostly about establishing yourself; honestly, I would have done it for free. The platform is invaluable to me, and it’s not solely about the paycheck.”
Although she did not disclose her earnings, it’s speculated she was referencing Jerrod Carmichael, who earned around $500,000 for his hosting gig. Carmichael had earlier expressed hesitance to host due to the Golden Globes’ history of diversity issues.
Ricky Gervais, another former host, also reflected on his lucrative pay but emphasized that he accepted roles based on personal interest rather than financial reward, stating he wouldn’t undertake a job he wouldn’t consider doing for free.
Glaser’s Historic Hosting
Glaser gained widespread recognition in 2020 after her noteworthy performance during the Netflix special, The Roast Of Tom Brady.
During the course of that evening, she humorously targeted several celebrities, including Glen Powell, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Timothee Chalamet, but her memorable achievement was being the first woman to host the Golden Globes solo, earning her acclaim for her comedic flair and engaging presence.
