Shehu Gabam, the Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), shared insights regarding his discussions with former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Gabam defended his party’s engagement with El-Rufai, emphasizing their right to hold such discussions.
“Why the concern surrounding Malam Nasir El-Rufai? Some claim he is irrelevant. If that’s the case, why the fuss over El-Rufai or Segun Sowunmi? If they truly matter, why not assign them roles to enhance governmental efficiency?” he asked.
Gabam explained that their meeting aimed to evaluate the nation’s situation in 2024 from the party’s perspective.
“As an opposition party with representation in parliament, state assemblies, and local governments, we have the responsibility to assess areas needing improvement and to broaden our party outreach.
“This is akin to what the APC executed during PDP’s challenges; they restructured and merged, which ultimately led to the PDP’s defeat.
“Thus, we are not acting inappropriately. I cannot fathom the uproar surrounding this as if El-Rufai’s visit or Segun Sowunmi’s participation is unprecedented. Our mission is to strive for a better Nigeria, not to act against its interests,” he stated.
Additionally, Gabam critiqued President Bola Tinubu’s ministers, asserting they lack the competence to fulfill the president’s objectives, highlighting the severe economic challenges Nigeria currently faces.
He noted that if a president encounters significant issues within their second year, much like Jonathan did before losing an election, their tenure may be at risk.
