Actor and director Mel Gibson has disclosed that his $14.5 million Malibu home was ravaged in the recent wildfires that swept across Los Angeles.
His residence, which he inhabited for 15 years, was completely destroyed along with multiple other properties nearby.
Gibson criticizes response to California wildfires
“I felt uneasy during our talk because I was aware that my neighborhood was on fire. I kept wondering if my place was still standing. When I returned home, it was indeed gone. While it’s just a material loss, it’s truly heartbreaking.”
Gibson was recording a podcast in Austin, Texas, when the wildfires spread to his cliffside residence.
Nevertheless, he felt thankful that both his family and even his chickens emerged unharmed.
“We checked on the chicken coop, and they were all fine. We gave them some food and water, and they seemed happy and continued laying eggs. They weren’t affected at all.”
The wildfires have ravaged more than 31,000 acres and resulted in the loss of around 10,000 buildings, marking one of the most devastating incidents in Los Angeles history.
Tragically, at least 16 lives have been lost, and over 180,000 residents have had to evacuate their homes.
While Gibson appreciated the safety of his loved ones, he took issue with California’s leadership and their response to this calamity.
“It seems like some people were neglectful in their duties, mostly our leaders. That’s a burden they must carry. Children are suffering from trauma. Someone needs to be held accountable,” he stated.
In a controversial comment about California Governor Gavin Newsom, Gibson remarked: “Spend less on hair gel.”
The situation regarding the state’s wildfire response has ignited a political firestorm, with Republican President-elect Donald Trump demanding Newsom’s resignation.
On the other hand, the governor has defended the state’s actions, asserting that officials are “utilizing all available resources” to tackle the emergency.
Gibson reflected on the personal loss of his home, acknowledging its emotional impact, but he stressed the importance of staying strong.
“These possessions are merely things.”
“The silver lining is that everyone I care about is safe and healthy.”
