After an exceptional 2024, Vietnam’s coffee sector is off to a strong start in 2025. Within the first 15 days of the year, the country exported nearly 73,820 tons of coffee, generating almost $400 million (around 10,000 billion VND).
Historic coffee export performance in Vietnam
Data from the General Department of Customs indicates that in 2024, Vietnam exported about 1.35 million tons of coffee, accruing $5.62 billion, marking a historic high.
The average price for exported Vietnamese coffee also reached a significant $4,158 per ton, peaking at $5,855 per ton in November 2024.
In the domestic market, coffee bean prices hit a record of 131,000 VND per kilogram, allowing farmers to clear over 90,000 VND in profit per kilogram after expenses.
Early indicators for 2025
Continuing this upward trend, the early days of January 2025 saw a substantial rise in coffee export value.
While the volume of exports dropped by 22.9% compared to the same timeframe last year, the value rose by 41.3% due to soaring prices.
The average export price for coffee during this period was $5,410 per ton, which represents a 30.1% increase from the average price in 2024.
Strong demand and projections for the market
The Central Highlands region, known for its coffee cultivation, is currently experiencing peak harvesting. Despite this, export prices remain high, driven by strong international demand.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development aims for a total coffee output of 1.98 million tons in 2025, a slight rise from the previous year.
Additionally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts a 5.1 million bags increase in global coffee consumption for the 2024-2025 season, reaching 168.1 million bags. Vietnam’s coffee exports are expected to rise by 1.8 million bags to hit 24.4 million bags due to enhanced supply.
Currently, domestic coffee prices vary from 118,200 to 119,000 VND per kilogram, with expectations of a slight increase as the Tet holiday approaches and supply diminishes.
Increased demand for Robusta coffee
On the global market, Robusta coffee prices continue to gain traction.
As of January 21, futures for March 2025 Robusta coffee reached $5,143 per ton, while May 2025 futures climbed to $5,090 per ton.
With solid international demand and rising prices, Vietnam’s coffee sector is poised for another successful year.
