Reese Witherspoon has clarified her friendship with Kate Winslet, dispelling rumors of a falling out between the two actresses.
Last week, Witherspoon discussed her friendship with a well-known actress during an interview with People. She recounted a moment where she humorously “roasted” the actress while presenting her an award, joking about their experience with laser hair removal.
Fans speculated that this actress was Winslet, leading to assumptions about their friendship being strained.
However, Witherspoon addressed these rumors in an Instagram story on Saturday, stating: “Hey everyone…just had a chat with my longtime friend Kate W. We found this all hilarious. Don’t buy into what the internet says. We’re great friends and have never had a disagreement.”
She added a follow-up message, saying, “This is absolutely FALSE…so silly!” alongside a headline about their supposed rift.
Witherspoon Reflects on the Award Ceremony
During her interview with Will Ferrell, Witherspoon shared, “It really bothers me.”
She recounted an incident with a friend she barely knew who is a serious actress, who asked her to present an award. She misinterpreted the ceremony as a roast and made some offbeat jokes on stage.
“I joked about our laser hair removal experience,” she recalled, expressing her embarrassment about the mishap.
“We’re not friends anymore,” Witherspoon joked, adding with a laugh, “I don’t think she likes me now. I thought it was hilarious, but I really misread the room. It was bad. Honestly, she doesn’t talk to me anymore. Oh well.”
Some fans deduced that Winslet was the actress in question because Witherspoon presented her with the Artist of the Year award at the 2007 BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards.
However, it’s worth noting that Witherspoon and Winslet also shared a moment on stage together at the 2016 Oscars where they appeared friendly with no signs of discord.
