Although television celebrities might seem distant, they are just like anyone else, experiencing the impact of social media reactions. Ariel Winter, known for her role in ‘Modern Family’, has reflected on how online criticism affected her self-worth as she grew up.
In an interview with People magazine, she shared her experiences with negative comments from viewers. She recalls reading hurtful headlines where adults criticized her appearance, stating, “I constantly saw articles describing me as looking terrible, pregnant, or overweight.”
She shared that she faced this outpouring of negativity at a young age, feeling unprepared to handle such public disdain. “I was only 14, and it severely impacted my self-esteem. I came to understand what it felt like to be hated. I felt targeted regardless of the situation. I struggled to look in the mirror and say, ‘I appreciate this version of myself,’ she admitted.
Removed by social services due to abuse
Ariel Winter’s past includes some painful experiences. The Los Angeles Department of Services removed her from her mother’s custody due to abuse, a chapter that left a lasting impression on her: “It was an incredibly painful period,” she reflected.
This traumatic event led to her older sister Shanelle Gary becoming her legal guardian. Winter spoke highly of their bond, stating, “I had a wonderful upbringing thanks to her guidance.” It’s worth noting that she received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Television Comedy Ensemble for her performance in ‘Modern Family’.
