Comedian Katherine Ryan, who once endorsed Meghan Markle, has recently voiced concerns regarding the Duchess of Sussex’s authenticity in light of her new Netflix series, With Love, Meghan.
Ryan, noted for her humor and specials like Glitter Room, conveyed her feelings on her podcast, highlighting that while she initially supported Markle, the new series comes across as too polished and lacking sincerity.
“I used to support Meghan Markle. I was truly on her side… but she’s become quite Hollywood, even for me,” Ryan mentioned on the ‘Telling Everybody Everything’ podcast.
Ryan also highlighted contradictions in Markle’s narratives about her upbringing. In the series, Markle mentioned she had TV dinners, which conflicts with her earlier claims of enjoying “farm fresh” food.
This inconsistency, according to Ryan, contributes to the growing belief that Markle‘s public persona is more of a crafted image rather than a reflection of her true self.
Criticism Surrounding Meghan’s Netflix Series
Ryan isn’t the only one expressing criticism. Analysts have noted similarities between Markle‘s on-screen presence and those of seasoned lifestyle influencers like Martha Stewart and Rachael Ray, suggesting that Markle lacks the authenticity necessary to engage with viewers. Furthermore, reports indicating the show was filmed in a rental property rather than in Markle‘s own home have intensified doubts.
Regardless of the mixed reviews, Netflix has already approved a second season. Ryan speculated that the viewership might stem more from “hate-watching” rather than genuine interest.
“Who really knows what Netflix is up to? They are clever—people will keep watching whether they love or dislike it,” she commented.
Ryan also criticized Markle‘s seeming hesitation to fully embrace her royal background.
“I’d prefer someone to say, ‘I was on Suits and now I’m a prince’s wife,’ rather than act like they’re just being humble,” she noted.
Previously, Ryan defended Markle’s efforts to buck royal conventions, but her recent remarks signal a shift towards skepticism regarding Markle’s public image.
As With Love, Meghan continues to generate discussion, it remains unclear if audiences will accept or reject its polished depiction.
