This year’s theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” mirroring the Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, focusing on the concept of the Black dandy.
Monica Miller, head of Africana Studies at Barnard College, Columbia University, explored the portrayal of the Black dandy, tracing its history from 18th-century art to contemporary representations in fashion and film. The exhibition draws heavily from her 2009 book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.”
