Miley Cyrus Reveals Vocal Condition Shaping Her Career

Miley Cyrus opens up about vocal condition and its impact on her career

Miley Cyrus has openly discussed a health issue that has greatly impacted both her vocal abilities and professional journey.

During a recent chat on Apple Music’s “The Zane Lowe Show,” the 32-year-old singer disclosed that she has been diagnosed with Reinke’s edema, a condition that leads to fluid accumulation in the vocal cords, resulting in a raspy sound.

A distinct sound amid difficulties

Cyrus shared that a significant polyp on her vocal cord plays a role in her unique vocal quality. She described performing with this issue as akin to “running a marathon while wearing ankle weights,” indicating the physical strain it puts on her during live shows.

Despite these hurdles, she considers her condition a professional advantage, believing it adds character to her voice.

While early lifestyle choices like partying and smoking may have aggravated her condition, Cyrus clarified that they weren’t the primary causes.

She remarked, “My voice has consistently had this sound,” suggesting that her unique vocal qualities are inherent.

Health issues shape touring plans

Aside from her vocal struggles, Cyrus has faced various health challenges affecting her touring philosophy.

She recounted her experience with a ruptured ovarian cyst during a New Year’s Eve show and a knee injury incurred while filming a music video, both of which led to a short stay in the ICU. Such events have led her to reevaluate the physical challenges of intensive touring.

Cyrus underscored the significance of sustainable performance methods, explaining that she doesn’t lip-sync and considers live performances physically demanding.

She also highlighted that tour planning must be economically viable, taking into account the expenses for her team and production. Consequently, she has chosen to limit her tours to prioritize her health and overall well-being.
