The food community is in shock following the unexpected death of culinary icon Anne Burrell, who passed away at 55 in her Brooklyn residence. Fans are left pondering the circumstances surrounding her passing and her absence from ‘Worst Cooks in America.’
Burrell, famous for her dynamic teaching approach and distinctive spiky blonde hair, was noticeably absent from Season 28 of the show, which featured chefs Jeff Mauro and Antonia Lofaso taking over her role.
At the time of her absence, neither Anne nor Food Network provided a clear reason, and the network did not respond to inquiries from news outlets, leaving fans seeking explanations on social media.
In January, fans expressed their concerns in the comments of one of Anne’s Instagram posts, but her response was vague, adding to the mystery surrounding her situation.
“Honestly, I don’t know,” Burrell said, adding that she hoped to return for the next season, though she sidestepped a question regarding her affiliation with Food Network.
Her absence followed 14 years and 27 seasons of co-hosting and mentoring, where her unique blend of tough love and support aided aspiring chefs.
Without any formal announcement or explanation, fans speculated that potential health or professional changes might have been occurring behind the scenes.

In her last days, Burrell showed no clear signs of trouble. Just days prior to her death, she posted a joyful photo on Instagram with local New York personality Elizabeth Eaton Rosenthal, known as the Green Lady of Brooklyn.
“I ran into @greenladyofbrooklyn in my neighborhood today!!” Anne wrote. “I might have followed her down the street for a minute. She’s absolutely wonderful!!! #ilovewhatido #luckygirl.”
However, a few days later, she was discovered unresponsive (around 7:50 a.m.) at her Brooklyn home, according to a spokesperson for the New York Police Department. Despite the quick arrival of emergency services, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Anne was a cherished wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend,” her family remarked. “Her radiant smile brightened every room.”
“Anne’s spirit reached far beyond her inner circle, impacting millions worldwide. Although she is no longer with us, her kindness, energy, and endless passion remain with us forever.”
Investigations are ongoing, and the cause of her death has not yet been revealed. She is survived by her husband, Stuart Claxton, whom she wed in 2021, and her stepson, Javier.
“Anne was an extraordinary individual and a gifted chef,” Food Network stated. “She devoted her life to teaching, competing, and highlighting the joy food brings to our lives.”
