The 2025 Met Gala saw many unforgettable moments, but none were as discussed as Shakira‘s unintentional announcement about Rihanna’s pregnancy.
While at this New York event, the 48-year-old Colombian artist accidentally shared the surprise during a red carpet interview with NBC News.
“Rihanna, I want to see her. Yes, I want to see her a lot!” exclaimed a thrilled Shakira before adding, “And I just heard the news too.”
Responding to the reporter’s puzzled expression, she clarified: “She’s pregnant.”
Realizing her potential blunder, Shakira looked anxious and covered her face, asking, “Was I not supposed to say that?”
In an attempt to lighten the mood, both she and the reporter laughed, though Shakira left, clearly embarrassed.
A$AP Rocky comes to the rescue
Fortunately for the Waka Waka star, major news outlets had already confirmed the report. Earlier in the day, Page Six announced that Rihanna, 37, was expecting after she was spotted with a noticeable baby bump at the gala.
Her partner, rapper A$AP Rocky, also confirmed it on the red carpet, stating, “Rihanna’s outfit tonight… I don’t know, whatever, just don’t cover her belly, you know?” At 36, Rocky expressed that it was the right moment to share the pregnancy news: “I’m happy that everyone is happy for us, because we definitely are.”
Rihanna herself addressed her pregnancy during the event, radiating confidence in a grey Marc Jacobs ensemble paired with a black floor-length skirt and cropped jacket while cradling her belly with pride.
She stated, “I feel good, surprisingly good, and not too overwhelmed at the moment. Initially, I felt a bit tired, but now I’m just excited.” Rihanna and A$AP Rocky already have two children: RZA, 2, and Riot, 20 months, making this their third child together since they began dating in 2020.
Despite Shakira’s mix-up, the news had already been out in the public and was met with enthusiasm from fans. It’s a reminder that even celebrities can have their moments of excitement and slip-ups.
