During a recent interview, acclaimed actor Nicolas Cage shared a shocking experience where he nearly faced a life-threatening situation while shooting an intense surfing scene for his latest movie, ‘The Surfer’. In this psychological thriller, Cage portrays a businessman who ventures back to his Australian hometown to purchase the beach house of his youth.
The character’s ambition is to replicate a iconic moment from the movie ‘Big Wednesday’: “I still visualize Jan-Michael Vincent on the surfboard, gliding across the screen… It was stunning, the water, the board’s motion, followed by that unforgettable faceplant in slow motion… I thought, ‘I want to capture that moment,’ but I didn’t have the time to master the technique”.
Though Cage isn’t featured in many surf scenes, he expresses a desire to have spent more time surfing: “Lorcan Finnegan, the director, and I had extensive discussions about this. He understood my wish to get more involved. But we faced challenges like weather conditions, not to mention shark sightings and other concerns”.
His mishap while surfing
Cage has attempted surfing before but doesn’t remember it fondly: “I had a rough time. I tried surfing at Sunset Beach, but my instructor insisted on giving me a short board, despite my request for a long one. I got knocked around and got trapped in the tide. They told me my board went missing. I ended up riding waves while flipping around, and it was a close call for my life. Now, with a young son, I question whether I should continue. My dream is to retire, surf leisurely, sip red wine, and enjoy spaghetti.”
