Another teaser is out, showcasing a series centered on disorganized young adults attempting to navigate life in New York. FX’s Adults, set to launch on May 28 via Hulu, aims to blend the essence of Friends with the vibe of Girls, presenting a familiar narrative filled with interdependent roommates, shared toothbrushes, and chaotic dinner gatherings. The trailer humorously declares, “You guys are completely out of control.” This sets the tone for a whirlwind of awkward dates and questionable romantic encounters, featuring Julia Fox with a knowing grin.
The Good, the Bad, and the Overdone
The cast shines—Malik Elassal and Lucy Freyer embody millennial anxiety effectively, while guest stars like Charlie Cox and D’Arcy Carden tease exciting twists. However, the “chaotic young adult” theme feels overused. Series like Girls introduced it in 2012, Broad City refined it, and even Insecure added depth. Adults dives into the “we’re flawed individuals” narrative, but without innovative elements, it risks resembling a TikTok skit stretched into a full series.

Why It Might Work
The show has a distinctive advantage with creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw from The Tonight Show, known for their sharp, absurd humor. A memorable moment in the trailer features a character saying, “We’re not good people… yet.” This encapsulates the show’s core message, and if the writing effectively combines emotional moments with humor, Adults could differentiate itself from its forerunners.
While Adults isn’t breaking new ground, it cleverly borrows familiar concepts. Thanks to a strong cast and FX’s expertise in crafting antiheroes (even clumsy ones), it may end up succeeding. Or it might fall flat. Regardless, it’s sure to create an entertaining atmosphere.
