Mother Faints Upon Learning of Son’s Theft
In a troubling incident, a mother fainted after discovering that her 14-year-old son, Sulaiman Abubakar, was caught by security personnel at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly stealing cables and wiring from the facility.
Reports indicate that Abubakar, who is in JSS 2 at Eleyele High School, was attempting to steal these items from the stadium on a Thursday night.
According to sources from PUNCH Online, Abubakar managed to access the main bowl during a training session of the Shooting Star Football Club.
Security personnel revealed that he admitted to spending the night in one of the stadium’s rooms after all the entrances were secured.
“He stated that he slept in a room after the security officers locked up the main bowl,” said a security source.
A local trader, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted Abubakar’s confession, mentioning that he used a large rock to break pipes and cut the camera and lighting wires.
“He also confessed that his intention was to sell the stolen items, which are valued at around N300,000,” the trader added.
Upon seeing her son in handcuffs, the suspect’s mother, who resides in the Sabo Area of Mokola, fainted.
“It took the workers at the stadium to help her regain consciousness. When she woke up, she mentioned that her son had upset her the night before and had faced consequences for it,” she reported.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Sports Council, Tunde Ajibike, confirmed the incident and stated that the boy has been handed over to the police for further inquiries.
“It is accurate. The Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke, has already visited the site to assess the damage from the attempted theft,” Ajibike said.
“During her visit, the commissioner urged the staff of the Sports Council, who are responsible for the stadium, to be more vigilant. She emphasized that maintaining security is a collective responsibility among stakeholders. The state government will enhance the security measures at the complex to prevent similar incidents in the future,” he added.
