The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has informed the public about the presence of an unauthorized product known as ‘Fair Child Soap’ in Nigeria.
NAFDAC took this step following a report related to the inappropriate advertising and use of skin whitening products among young people.
During a standard post-marketing examination, NAFDAC identified that an unregistered imported cosmetic item, “Fair Child Soap,” was being sold in various shops across Lagos. The product is aimed at children and is promoted using misleading and false labeling.
“In a meeting with the distributor (Lexmart Cosmetics Ltd), it was verified that the soap was imported, with intentions to manufacture it locally. As a result of this finding, the company has been penalized and ordered to cease any further sales since the product lacks approval for distribution in Nigeria and is not registered with NAFDAC,” the statement indicated.
The agency expressed concerns that due to the skin-lightening properties and the fact that it targets children, there are serious risks including skin damage, exposure to harmful substances, and lasting dermatological issues.
