Pastor Chris Oyakhilome
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a warning to Nigerians about the dangers of consuming too much salt. This notice follows a viral video where Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, founder of Loveworld Incorporated (Christ Embassy), advised his followers to increase their salt intake.
In this widely shared video, Oyakhilome suggested that there is a deliberate attempt to discourage salt consumption among Africans, supposedly to promote reliance on sodium-based medications. He stated, “They told you not to take salt so that you can buy their drugs—drugs that contain sodium.”
As a result, the health ministry has called on Nigerians to follow scientifically backed dietary recommendations and has highlighted the health risks of consuming salt irresponsibly. A statement from Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, stressed the importance of combating misinformation that could endanger public health.
“The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is aware of a viral video featuring a prominent religious figure challenging medical advice regarding salt intake,” the statement noted. “While we respect the role of faith leaders in our community, it is essential to correct false information that threatens public health.”
Balogun acknowledged that while salt is a source of sodium, necessary for various bodily functions, too much can lead to serious health issues. He warned that high salt intake is linked to conditions like hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems.
He also referenced global dietary guidelines, mentioning that “the World Health Organization recommends a limit of 5 grams of salt each day, which is about one teaspoon, for adults.”
In conclusion, the ministry encouraged individuals to seek advice from qualified health professionals and to be wary of claims lacking scientific support.
