Enugu Police to Take Action Against Officers for Extortion of ₦1M
The Enugu State Police Command has announced plans to take legal action against officers from the Awkunanaw Police Station, Garriki, accused of extorting ₦1 million from a traveler.
The victim shared his experience on X, detailing how the police officers stopped a bus carrying his brother.
According to @Mr_Robmichael1, the officers kidnapped his brother and transported him to a remote village, where they demanded ₦1 million.
“Police in Enugu kidnapped my younger brother, took him to an unknown village, and extorted ₦1 million from him. They even charged ₦50,000 as a POS fee,” he wrote.
In a later update, @Mr_Robmichael1 informed that the officers involved had been identified and that he had communicated with the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Dan Ndukwe, and the Divisional Police Officer.
He also mentioned that the money was recovered after visiting the police station.
“Officers identified. We are at the MTD Police Station, Garriki, Enugu, waiting for the refund. Thanks to @DanNdukwe and the DPO of MTD police station,” he said.
“Much appreciation to Mr. Chukwuegu Longinus, the DPO of Awkunanaw Police Station, who immediately acted upon my report, went to the checkpoint, and ensured the officers refunded the amount. It’s chaotic here in Nigeria. ₦1 million was retrieved from the police officers at Awkunanaw Police station, MTD, Garriki, Enugu.”
In response, Ndukwe condemned the officers’ actions, asserting that such behavior is intolerable and that those responsible will face consequences.
“This is completely unacceptable, and as I informed @Mr_Robmichael1 over the phone post-recovery, a mere refund is insufficient. The involved officers will have to pay for their actions. We do not tolerate this in the NPF,” expressed Ndukwe on X.
In a related report, PUNCH Metro disclosed in September that the Lagos State Police Command had initiated proceedings against four officers accused of extorting ₦1 million from three National Youth Service Corps members in Surulere.
User Oluyemi Fasipe noted that officers from the Area C Police Command reportedly took ₦1 million from the corps members, who were stopped while traveling along the Surulere expressway. After stopping them for a search, the situation escalated into an argument before they were taken to the Area C police station, where the extortion reportedly occurred.
This is how it happened:
They halted the @PMTNigeria bus he was on, and made all passengers disembark for a search. My brother took his luggage but left a small bag behind.
Then they claimed he was hiding something in that bag….. pic.twitter.com/SBTwbaKfFe
